Paper Types

Summary: Paper types are graded by basic size, manufacturing process and usage.


Basic Size: 17 x 22

Bond: Strong, durable paper especially suitable to electronic printing and use in office machines including copiers and desktop printers. Bond paper has basis weights of 13 to 24 lbs. It is characterized by erasability, good absorption, and rigidity. Bond grade paper is typically used in copiers and for letterheads, business forms, and a variety of documents produced with inkjet and laser printers. Safety paper has an embedded watermark that prevents duplication.

Ledger: Originally, a writing paper used for pen and ink records, as in ledger or blankbooks, but now also used for printing purposes. Ledger papers are generally made from cotton fiber, bleached chemical wood pulps, or mixtures thereof. The usual ledger paper has basis weights of 24 to 36 lbs. As it is subjected to considerable usage, it requires a high degree of durability and permanence. Significant properties include strength, especially tearing resistance, erasability, water and ink resistance, uniformity of surface and color, smoothness, and a good surface for ruling

Manifold: A lightweight, dense and durable paper with basis weights of 7 to 10 lbs. Normally with an unglazed finish but also comes in glazed and cockle finishes. Used interleaved with carbon paper for manifold or carbon sets for typing duplicate copies.

Onionskin: Lightweight, durable rag paper normally with a cockle finish although other glazed and unglazed finishes are available. Onion skin has a basis weights of 7 to 10 lbs. Normally used in carbon sets, interleaved between pieces of carbon paper for typing duplicates.


Basic Size: 24 x 36

Newsprint: Inexpensive paper made primarily of mechanically ground wood pulp rather than chemical pulp is known as newsprint. Has a shorter lifespan than other papers but is cheap to produce in bulk. Typically used for newspapers and may also be used for comic books, some newsletters and trade magazines and buy/sell/trade classified ad weeklies.


Basic Size: 25 x 38

Book: Also known as Bible (premium grade), Coated, Offset, Text.

General term to describe a type of paper suitable for printing, (except newsprint and bristol), especially offset printing. Book paper can have many different finishes and may be coated or uncoated. More opaque than Bond paper and good for 2-sided printing it is also characterized by excellent folding qualities and durability. Book paper has basis weights range from 22 to 150 lbs. Offset papers are especially suitable for offset printing due to increased resistance to water and picking. Most book grade papers can be used on offset presses. Primary paper for books and most graphic arts projects including brochures, annual reports, collateral marketing materials, newsletters, and booklets.

Bible: Also known as India, India Bible, Premium Book.

Thin, lightweight, opaque printing paper with basis weights of 14 to 30 lbs.. Generally made from 25% cotton and linen rags or flax in combination with chemical wood pulp. Typically has a long life. Its name comes from it being the type of paper used for Bibles. Typical uses, in addition to Bibles: prayer books, hymnals, dictionaries, encyclopedia, insurance rate books or other deluxe guides, and multi-fold package inserts.


Basic Size: 20 x 26

Cover: Also known as Card Stock

A heavy, stiff paper used for book covers, file folders, presentation folders, greeting cards, business cards, postcards, and brochures.


Basic Size: 22.5 x 28.5

Bristol: Also known as Bristol Board

A heavyweight paper with a bulk thickness of .006" or higher. Bristol paper may be made by layering or laminating papers together to the desired thickness. Used for paperback book or catalog covers, file folders, tags, and tickets.


Basic Size: 24 x 36

Tag:

A dense grade of paper that is strong and durable with basis weights of 80 to 300 lbs. Typically used for hang tags such as store tags on clothing or other products.
