3400 Series Bail Assembly Damage
6-20-96 Ed Palmer

Models: 3460, 3560, 3470, 3570, 3480, 3580

Summary:
The mylar paper clamp on the bail assembly is damaged.
Paper jams against the white plastic paper clamp.

Resolution:

- The sensors are out of tune, causing a false paper in condition. When
loading paper, the paper jams against the paper bail and damages it.

- The spring is missing from the paper bail assembly. When the print head is
moved to the right limit, the bail clamp should raise. If the bail does not
raise, the clamp will be damaged when loading paper.

SOLUTION: Replace the bail assembly [78400588-001] and perform a sensor tune.

WORKAROUND: Until the bail is replaced, the printer can be used as follows:
   - Remove the bail assembly.
   - Open the top cover.
   - Load the paper using the manual knob.
   - Feed an extra form of paper, and guide it through the paper exit slot
     in the top cover.
   - Adjust the top of form manually as desired.
   - Close the top cover.
   - Resume printing.

SERVICE: This model has a return to depot warranty. Refer users with warranty
issues to depot, and have depot ship a bail assembly directly to the user. The
bail assembly is user replaceable. If the user has installation questions, refer
them to TallyGenicom Technical Support.

CAUTION: Insure the user performs a sensor tune, or the problem will recur.

NOTES:
- If the sensors are out of tune, the printer may not sense a paper out condition.

- Normally, when the paper is out and the LOAD/FF key is pressed, the print head
moves to the right and the paper clamp opens to the load position.

- If paper is in, and the LOAD/FF key is pressed, the print head and the paper bail
   clamp do not move.

- If the printer does not sense that the paper is out, then when paper is loaded the
paper bail clamp does not open, and paper jams against it as it loads.

- Heavy forms that are repeatedly jammed agianst the paper clamp can damage it.
