9 Dec 1997 Ed Palmer

Models: 3800 and 3900 series with serial number 9350-x-xxxx and higher or firmware revision 44A514691 or higher.

Summary: The user desires the printer to automatically enter tear-off mode when the paper reaches top of form. This is sometimes referred to as Document on Demand.

Note: Some older versions of documentation refer to Software Option 15. Software Option 15 is now reserved on this version of the printer. Auto Tear Off is now enabled through the Format menu.

To Enable the Auto Tear Off mode:

  • Place the printer off-line.
  • Press PROGRAM or MENU.
  • Press UP arrow- the display shows PRMENU.
  • Press ENTER (PROGRAM or MENU)- the First menu prints.
  • Press 2 then ENTER for Format.
  • Press 1 then ENTER for Modify Format.
  • Press the desired format number- 1 through 4, then ENTER.
  • Press 1 then ENTER for Print Format.
  • Press 4 then ENTER for Printing Mode.
  • Check the list of modes- Auto Tear-Off on FF is option 18 or 20.
  • Enter the option number (18 or 20), then ENTER to enable Auto Tear-Off on FF.
  • Press FIRST (CLEAR)- the First menu prints.
  • If desired, go back through the format menu and modify the other formats as needed.

Save the formats:

  • From the First menu, press 1 then ENTER to Exit.
  • Press 2 then ENTER to Save.
  • Press ENTER- the display shows EXIT.
  • Press ENTER- the printer exits the Program Menu.

Cycle the format:

Note: If the currently selected format is modified, the changes do not take effect until the format is reloaded.

  • If the desired format is shown on the display, press FORMAT until the next format is shown.
  • Press FORMAT until the desired format is shown on the display.

The paper will retract back to the print position when:

  • TEAROFF is pressed by the operator
  • When a print job is received (and the printer is on-line)
  • After a 15 second timeout, if User Defined Option 7 is enabled (this is the default).

    To disable the timeout:

  • Place the printer off-line.
  • Press PROGRAM or MENU.
  • Press UP arrow- the display shows PRMENU.
  • Press ENTER (PROGRAM)- the First menu prints.
  • Press 4 then ENTER for User Defined Options- the list of options prints.

ENB indicates enabled, DIS indicates disables.

  • Press 7 then ENTER to toggle the Paper Tear-Off Timeout- the options list will now show DIS.
  • Press FIRST (CLEAR)- the First menu prints.
  • From the First menu, press 1 then ENTER to Exit.
  • Press 2 then ENTER to Save.
  • Press ENTER- the display shows EXIT.
  • Press ENTER- the printer exits the Program Menu.

To test the Auto Tear Off mode:

  • Place the printer on-line.
  • Press FF- within two seconds, the paper will advance to the tearoff position, and the display will show TEAROFF.
  • Press ONLINE to retract the paper.

Notes:

  • The printer will automatically enter Tear-Off mode when the printer reaches logical top of form, and no data is received for two seconds. Logical top of form can be obtained with a form-feed code, when the proper number of line feeds are sent, or vertical positioning commands move the paper to logical top of form.
  • Auto Tear Off will not work if any other data is received immediately after top of form is reached- this includes nulls, spaces, or control characters.
  • Auto Tear Off will not work properly if the logical and physical form lengths differ. Ensure the printer form length is set to the actual form size.
