04-31-97   Ed Palmer and Larry Kyger

07-17-2003 Revised, Steve Urgolites

Summary: There are two different styles of carriage drive cable available. Proper identification is critical for replacement.

WARNING: Carriage cable replacement should be performed only by a
qualified technician. Observe proper ESD procedures when handling
circuit boards.

CARRIAGE IDENTIFICATION

There are two styles of carriage assembly. Since the new carriage can be
installed into an older printer, the proper carriage drive cable cannot
be determined by the printer model. Always inspect the carriage before
ordering the cable.

In the old style carriage, the carriage drive cable is wound around a peg
on the right side of the carriage. The cable part number is 3A0214P02. The
cable is 81.56 inches long, and has a black eyelet. The spring is
44A417866-039.

In the new style carriage, the cable enters the right side of the carriage
through a blue rubber grommet. Cable part number 3A1101P02 is 80.21 inches
in length, has a blue eyelet, and has the blue rubber grommet already
installed. 3A1101P02 has been replaced by 3A1101P03 and now this has been
replaced by 3A1739P01 Carriage Cable / 3A1739B01 Carriage Cable Kit. The spring is
44A417866-040.

CARRIAGE ASSEMBLY

To replace the carriage on an older printer, order carriage kit 3A0124B03.
This includes the new style carriage, the carriage drive cable, the spring,
an upgraded carriage motor control chip, and the tool to replace the chip.

When replacing the new style carriage, order kit 3C0930G02. This includes
the carriage, the carriage drive cable, and the spring.
