Summary:
 Verifying firmware revision levels in 4400 Series printers.

Resolution:
 


- The firmware number on the SMIM (standard or XT) or SPER (XT+)  board will 
  ALWAYS be one number higher than the firmware number on the SMSM or SMIS board.

* Exception: SPER firmware 44A514512 will match with SMIS firmware 
  44A414513 or 44A514521.

- If the firmware on one board is updated, the firmware on the other board MUST 
  also be updated with a matching revision.

- A firmware mismatch can cause any number of odd problems.  Typical symptoms 
  are the loss of certain fonts, especially the 16.7 CPI fonts, or the inability 
  to select barcodes.

- GENICOM ships new boards unpopulated, with no EPROM, RAM, or PAL (fuselink) chips.
  The chips must be transferred from the old board to the new board, and jumper 
  settings must be confirmed.  If a board is received from a third-party source with 
  the chips installed, or swapped between printers, chips MUST be transferred from 
  the old board to the new board.

- After changing firmware or boards, the printer MUST be re-initialized to 
  factory defaults.  The battery backed memory (NVRAM) will be corrupted until the 
  preinter is re-intialized.  Symptoms of memory corruption include:
  error codes 020 and 420, paper running backwards when the FORM FEED key is pressed, 
  and any other number of odd problems.
