4000  Series

4000 Series - High Speed Parallel Problems
04-01-97 Ed Palmer

Models: 4000 Series; All

Summary:
PROBLEM: No printing, or incorrect printing when connected to an H-P Jet Direct EX print server, a Castille print server, a Pentium or 686 based PC, or other high speed parallel device. The printer may ignore control codes or pause during printing.

CAUSE: The older models in this series default to the original CENTRONICS parallel specification. Current parallel ports conform to the IBM parallel specification.

Resolution:
SOLUTION: Change the parallel interface BUSY lead characteristics:

BUSY BY CHARACTER

Most modern parallel interfaces require that the BUSY lead toggle with each character- the older 4000 series toggle the BUSY lead only on a full line of data. For most devices, this is the only change required. To change the interface from BUSY by line to BUSY by character:

4410XT+, 4440XT+, 4470XT, 4490XT, 4810, 4840 - set interface strap H-18 to 0 or OUT from the printer control panel.

4410, 4410XT, 4440, or 4440XT with SMPI/2; 4470 or 4490 with SMPI/4 interface board- set jumper J49/J50 on the SMPI board to the J49 position. The SMPI (Shuttle Matrix Parallel Interface) board is located in the logic cage on the right side of the printer.

4410A or 4440A with SMPI/1- set jumper J21/J22 to the J22 position. The control panel on the A model has a red LED display.

Printers with a SMPI/3 or SMPI/5 have DataProducts long-line interfaces. These boards must be replaced with a SMPI/2 or SMPI/4 respectively- these boards are Centronics and DataProducts short-line.

BUSY REFLECTS ACK

Some devices, notably the Castille print server, require that the BUSY lead reflect the ACK signal. To change the interface to BUSY reflects ACK:

4410XT+, 4440XT+, 4470XT, 4490XT, 4810, 4840- set interface strap H-17 to 0 or OUT from the printer control panel.

4410, 4410XT, 4440, or 4440XT with SMPI/2; 4470 or 4490 with SMPI/4 interface board- set jumper J52/J51 on the SMPI board to the J51 position. The SMPI (Shuttle Matrix Parallel Interface) board is located in the logic cage on the right side of the printer.

4410A or 4440A with SMPI/1- set jumper J62/J61to the J61position. The control panel on the A model has a red LED display.

Printers with a SMPI/3 or SMPI/5 have DataProducts long-line interfaces. These boards must be replaced with a SMPI/2 or SMPI/4 respectively- these boards are Centronics and DataProducts short-line.

NOTES:

- The 4810, 4840, 4910, 49040, and late model 4410XT, 4440XT, 4470XT, and 4490XT default to H-18 OUT.

- These straps will not fix problems with the 4812, 4842 or the 4492XT. The SmartGraphics board in these models controls the interface. Interface control is set through the D strap set- refer to the IGP or Code V programmer's manual.

- The description of strap H-18 in some of the user's manuals is incorrect.
