4000 Series - HP JetDirect EX Plus

Models: 4410 / 4440; 4470 / 4490. All

Summary:
 PROBLEM: No printing, or incorrect printing when connected to an H-P Jet Direct EX Plus, 3 EX Plus print server. The printer may ignore control codes, pause during printing, or print partial jobs.

CAUSE: Most modern parallel interfaces, including the HP JetDirect EX Plus, require that the BUSY lead toggle with each character (BUSY by character)- the older 4000 series conform to the original Centronics specification, and toggle the BUSY lead only on a full line of data (BUSY by line).

Resolution:
 Change the parallel interface BUSY lead characteristics on the printer.

- 4410XT+, 4440XT+, 4470XT, 4490XT, 4810, 4840, 4910, 4940- set interface strap H-18 to 0 or OUT from the printer control panel. H-17 may also have to be set to 0 or OUT.

NOTE: The 4810, 4840, 4910, 4940, and late model 4410XT, 4440XT, 4470XT, and 4490XT default to H-18 OUT.

- 4410, 4410XT, 4440, or 4440XT with SMPI/2; 4470 or 4490 with SMPI/4 interface board- set jumper J49/J50 on the SMPI board to the J49 position. The SMPI (Shuttle Matrix Parallel Interface) board is located in the logic cage on the right side of the printer. J51/J52 may also have to be set to J51.

- 4410A or 4440A with SMPI/1- set jumper J21/J22 to the J22 position. J61/J62 may also have to be set to J61. (The control panel on the A model has a red LED display.)

- 4410, 4410XT, 4440, or 4440XT with SMPI/3; 4470 or 4490 with SMPI/5- these versions of the SMPI are DataProducts long-line interfaces, and are not Centronics compatible. These boards must be replaced with a SMPI/2 or SMPI/4 respectively.

- SMPI/6, SMPI/7, SMPI/8- these are special OEM versions of the SMPI board.

TEST: To test the connection between the HP JetDirect EX Plus and the printer:

- Connect the printer to Parallel Port 1 on the JetDirect. Only Port 1 on the JetDirect 3 EX Plus will print the test page.

- Ensure the printer is on-line.

- Press the TEST key on the JetDirect for 10 seconds.

- After about 30 seconds, the JetDirect status page should print.

- Examine the status page for any incorrect text.

- If the test page does not print correctly, there is a problem between the JetDirect and the printer.

- If the test page prints correctly, but jobs do not print correctly from the system, there is a problem between the JetDirect and the host system.

NOTES:

- This procedure will not fix problems with the 4812, 4842, 4492XT, or 4592XT. The SmartGraphics board in these models controls the interface. Interface control is set through the D strap set- refer to the IGP or Code V programmer's manual. The SmartGraphics parallel interface is BUSY by character only.

- The description of strap H-18 in some of the user's manuals is incorrect.
