4000 Series and HP JetDirect

MODELS: 4410, 4440, 4410XT, 4440XT, 4410XT+, 4440XT+, 4470, 4490, 4470XT, 4490XT

SUMMARY: No printing, or incorrect printing when connected to an HP Jet Direct external print server. The printer may ignore control codes, double print, pause during printing, or print partial jobs.

NOTE: Please read this entire note to determine the appropriate solution.

CHECK: To test the connection between the JetDirect and the printer:

• Connect the printer to the JetDirect.
• If this is a multi-port JetDirect, ensure the printer is connected to Parallel Port 1 (the test page is pinted only through this port).
• Ensure the printer is on-line.
• Press and hold the TEST key on the JetDirect until the Status and Activity LED's will flash.
• When Status is OFF and Activity is ON, release TEST. This sets the status page language to ASCII, and prints a status page.
• Examine the status page for any incorrect text.
• If the test page does not print correctly, there is a problem between the JetDirect and the printer. Perform the checks listed below.
• If the test page does print correctly, but jobs do not print correctly from the system, there is a problem between the JetDirect and the host system.

THE PRESENT CONFIGURATION IS: ASIC (44Axxxxxx ER - 44Axxxxxx IS)

Set interface strap H-18 to 0 or OUT from the printer control panel. H-17 may also have to be set to 0 or OUT.

• Open the top cover- the display flashes LOC | CO.
• Locate the cover interlock switch by the top left hinge- pull up on the switch.
• Press CLEAR- the display shows LOC.
• Press PROGRAM- the Program menu prints.
• Press 4- the Interface Control menu prints.
• Press 9- the Hardware Straps menu prints.
• Press 3 repeatedly until the display shows 18 1.
• Press 2- the display shows 18 0.
• Press 0 twice to exit the menu.

4470XT, 4490XT
Set interface strap H-18 to 0 or OUT from the printer control panel. H-17 may also have to be set to 0 or OUT.

• Press ONLINE- the display shows LOCAL.
• Press PROGRAM- the display shows PRG: FONT.
• Press NEXT OPTION until the display shows PRG: INTERFACE OP.
• Press EXECUTE- the display shows IFOP: TYPE.
• Press NEXT OPTION- the display shows IFOP: PARALLEL SET.
• Press EXECUTE- the display shows PAROP: STRAPS.
• Press NEXT OPTION- the display shows PAROP: HWSTRAPS.
• Press EXECUTE- the display shows HWSTRAPS: DEFAULT.
• Press NEXT OPTION- the display shows HWSTRAPS: SET H.
• Press EXECUTE- the display shows HWSTRAP: H1 xxx.
• Press NEXT OPTION until the display shows HWSTRAP: H18 IN.
• Press EXECUTE- the display shows HWSTRAP: H18 OUT.
• Press QUIT- the display shows LOCAL.

4410, 4410XT, 4440, 4440XT, 4470, 4490

These printers have the SMPI (Shuttle Matrix Parallel Interface) board located in the logic cage in the right side of the printer.

• Remove the right side panel (loosen the three screws/bolts at the front of the right panel).
• Identify the SMPI group number, locate the SMPI logo on the edge of the board. Under the SMPI logo is part number 44C502591-Gxx, where xx is the group number. This group number is shown here as SMPI/x.
• To change the BUSY lead, a jumper on the SMPI board must be changed. The ACK lead may also need to be changed.

	SMPI/1: 4410A, 4440A Set jumper J21/J22 to the J22 position. J61/J62 may also have to be set to J61.
	SMPI/2: 4410, 4410XT, 4440, 4440XT Set jumper J49/J50 on the SMPI board to the J49 position. J51/J52 may also have to be set to J51.
	SMPI/3: 4410, 4410XT, 4440, 4440XT This version of the SMPI is a DataProducts long-line interface, and is not CENTRONICS compatible- it must be replaced with a SMPI/2.
	SMPI/4: 4470, 4490 (may possibly be found in 4410, 4410XT, 4440, 4440XT) Set jumper J49/J50 on the SMPI board to the J49 position. J51/J52 may also have to be set to J51.
	SMPI/5: 4470, 4490 (may possibly be found in 4410, 4410XT, 4440, 4440XT) This version of the SMPI is a DataProducts long-line interface, and is not CENTRONICS compatible- it must be replaced with a SMPI/4.
	SMPI/6, SMPI/7, SMPI/8: These are special versions of the SMPI board. Contact GENICOM for further help.

SOLUTION: Ensure the printer is set to the CENTRONICS parallel interface- refer to the printer manual.

For the 4410, 4410XT, 4440, 4440XT, 4470, 4490, ensure the SMPI/2 or SMPI/4 board is strapped for CENTRONICS by setting the following jumpers:

J2, J3, J5 (may be hard-wired), J8, J10, J11, J13, J16, J21, J23, J25, J27, J29, J31, J33, J35, J37, J39, J41, J43, J45, J47, J49, J51, J53, J55, J58, J60, J62, J63, J66, J68, J70, J71, J75, J77, J79, J82.

SOLUTION: Ensure the parallel cable is 10 feet in length or less and is in good condition.

Note: Resetting the printer will set all settings to factory default.

SOLUTION: Set the JetDirect to CENTRONICS parallel mode with JetAdmin:

• Start JetAdmin.
• Select Device | Modify.
• Select NEXT until the Optional menu is reached.
• Select the JetDirect/EX icon.
• Under Parallel Mode: Speed Connection, select Centronics.
• Turn the JetDirect power off, then on.

Note: This will reset all network configurations, including IP address.

• Turn off the JetDirect power.
• Press and hold the TEST key.
• Turn on the JetDirect power.
• After thirty seconds, release the TEST key.
• Press the JetDirect TEST key momentarily to print the status page.
