MODELS: 4410, 4440, 4410XT, 4440XT

NOTE: Due to printer and OS issues (described in the details), GENICOM does not anticipate any driver releases for Windows NT or Windows 2000.

SUMMARY: There is no ANSI driver for Windows NT for these printer models.

SOLUTION:

If the printer is a late model 4410XT+ or 4440XT+, it will include an IBM ProPrinter emulation. In this case, set the printer to ProPrinter mode, and use the IBM ProPrinter XL III driver that ships with Windows NT.
If the printer only has ANSI, Printronix, and DataProducts emulations, set the printer to ANSI mode, and use the Generic/Text Only driver that ships with Windows NT.
The XT+ Upgrade Kit is obsolete and is no longer available. These printers can no longer be upgraded to the ProPrinter emulation.

4410XT+ and 4440XT+

The 4410XT+ and 4440XT+ have and enhanced logic system that includes the IBM ProPrinter emulation. The logo on the front of the printer will show 4410XT or 4440XT (upgraded printers may not have the XT logo). To determine if the ProPrinter emulation is present:

Open the top cover- the display flashes LOC | CO.
Locate the cover interlock switch by the top left hinge- pull up on the switch.
Press CLEAR- the display shows LOC.
Press PROGRAM- the Program menu prints.
Press 9- the Emulation Mode menu prints.
This menu will show the available emulations- selection 3 should show IBM ProPrinter III.
Press 3 to select the ProPrinter emulation- the printer will reboot and load the ProPrinter software..
If ProPrinter is not listed under Emulation Mode, this is not a XT+ model- press 0 twice to exit the menu.

DETAILS:

There are problems with both the printer and Windows NT:

The 4410 and 4440 lack horizontal positioning commands- this command is critical for proper operation under Windows. In Windows 3.11 and Windows 95, this was resolved by calculating spacing at 10 CPI. The Font Select and Font Unselect commands within Windows are used to switch between 10 CPI and the currently selected CPI. While this method works, there are performance issues- the 4440 processor bogs down when re-loading the font tables on each CPI change.
In Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0, the Font Unselect command does not work. This means that the solution used in Windows 3.1 and 95 does not function under Windows NT.
