4800 Series - Ethernet Setup

Summary: The 4800 series with M205 or M305 network interface can setup the IP Address from the printer control panel.

Note: The M205/M305 can be provided as an external option that attaches to the parallel connector, or it can come mounted inside the printer.

To set the IP Address, SubNet Mask and Gateway:

Obtain the IP Address, SubNet Mask and Gateway from the system administrator.
Take the printer offline- the display shows LOCAL.
Press PROGRAM.
Press NEXT OPTION until the display shows ETHERNET.
If the Ethernet menu does not appear in the menu, either the TTLB firmware does not support the Ethernet menu, or the Ethernet menu is not enabled. Refer to the notes at the end of this document.
Press ENTER- the display shows ENET:IP ADDRESS.
Press ENTER- the currently set IP Address is shown.
The display shows I0.0.0.0 if the IP Address is not set.
Press ENTER- the display shows I0.
Use UP and DOWN arrow to increment the value by one, or use the DOUBLE arrow to increment the value by 10.
When the first segment shows the desired value, press NEXT to select the next segment.
Repeat until all four segments are set.
After the last segment is set, press ENTER to save the address- the display will flash ADDRESS SET.
The display will show ENET:IP ADDRESS.
Press NEXT OPTION- the display shows NETMASK.
Press ENTER- the currently set SubNet Mask is shown.
The display shows M0.0.0.0 if the SubNet Mask is not set.
Press ENTER- the display shows M0.
Use UP and DOWN arrow to increment the value by one, or use the DOUBLE arrow to increment the value by 10.
When the first segment shows the desired value, press NEXT to select the next segment.
Repeat until all four segments are set.
After the last segment is set, press ENTER to save the address- the display will flash ADDRESS SET.
The display will show ENET: NETMASK
Press NEXT OPTION- the display shows GATEWAY.
Press ENTER- the currently set Gateway address is shown.
The display shows G0.0.0.0 if the Gateway address is not set.
Press ENTER- the display shows G0.
Use UP and DOWN arrow to increment the value by one, or use the DOUBLE arrow to increment the value by 10.
When the first segment shows the desired value, press NEXT to select the next segment.
Repeat until all four segments are set.
After the last segment is set, press ENTER to save the address- the display will flash ADDRESS SET.
Press QUIT- the display shows LOCAL.
Turn off the printer power.
Wait 30 seconds, then turn the power on.

Details:

When the Ethernet menu is entered, a byte is modified in the printer's NVRAM. When the printer powers up, it looks at this byte. If the byte shows that the Ethernet menu was entered, the printer assumes that the address was modified. The printer then goes through a communications routine with the M205/M305 that sets the addresses.
Because of the large capacitors in the power supply, the printer must remain off for at least 30 seconds. If powered off for a shorter time, the printer may not properly recogognize a power off condition, and will not check the Ethernet byte.
If the M205/M305 is replaced, simple entering the Ethernet menu and quitting, then powering off will set the current addresses.
The addresses are programmed into the M205/M305 memory. If the printer is reset to factory defaults, the addresses in the Ethernet will reset to zero.

TTLB Firmware

TTLB firmware must be 44A516861 or later for 4800 series. To verify the TTLB version:

Take the printer offline- the display shows LOCAL.
Press FUNCTION.
Press ENTER.
Press NEXT OPTION until the display shows SOFTWARE IDS.
Press ENTER.
Press NEXT OPTION until the display shows TTLB.
Press ENTER.
Note the revision number.
Press QUIT- the display shows LOCAL.
If the TTLB revision is prior to 44A516861, the EPROMs on the TTLB board must be upgraded

Ethernet Menu

Printer control strap B34 must be IN for the ETHERNET menu to be available. To set B34:

Take the printer offline- the display shows LOCAL.
Press PROGRAM.
Press NEXT OPTION until the display shows PRINTER OPTS.
Press ENTER.
Press NEXT OPTION until the display shows PSTRAP SET B.
Press ENTER.
Press PREVIOUS OPTION until the display shows B34.
Press ENTER- the display shows B34: IN.
Press QUIT- the display shows LOCAL.
