The SIMM is flash capable and can be upgraded through the parallel or network interface.
Step 1: Reset the printer to factory defaults:
- Press MENU.
- Press NEXT until the display
shows SYSTEM MENU.
- Press SELECT- the display shows
FACTORY DEFAULTS.
- Press SELECT- the display shows
U.S.
- To reset to US defaults, press SELECT.
- To reset to international defaults, press SELECT- the display shows NON-US, press SELECT.
- Press START.
Step 2: If a twinax or coax interface is installed, turn
it off to prevent incoming jobs or errors from disrupting the upgrade:
- Press MENU.
- Press NEXT until the display
shows INTERFACE MENU.
- Press SELECT- the display shows
PORT.
- Press SELECT- the display shows
PARALLEL.
- Press NEXT until the display
shows TWINAX or COAX.
- Press SELECT- the display shows
ON.
- Press NEXT until the display
shows OFF.
- Press START.
Step 3a: To upgrade through the parallel port
of a PC:
- Download the flash load file.
- Unzip the the file to a folder on the hard drive. The file can be unzipped with WinZip for Windows, or PKZip for DOS or Windows. The zip
file contains three files- the flash load file (.LOD extension), the PORT utility and the PFD utility.
- Ensure the printer is connected with a IEEE-1284 parallel cable with a length of six feet
or less.
- If the printer is attached to any other source (network, serial, coax, twinax), disconnect
the input cables from the printer.
- Ensure the printer display shows READY
or POWER SAVER MODE.
- Open a DOS prompt and start the upgrade by issuing the the following command:
PORT <filename>
Where <filename> is the full name of the .LOD file.
Step 3b: To upgrade via TCP/IP from a
Windows host:
- Download the flash load file.
- Unzip the the file to a folder on the hard drive. The file can be unzipped with WinZip for Windows, or PKZip for DOS or Windows. The zip
file contains three files- the flash load file (.LOD extension), the PORT utility and the PFD utility.
- If the printer is attached to any other source (parallel, serial, coax, twinax), disconnect
the input cables from the printer.
- Ensure the printer display shows READY
or POWER SAVER MODE.
- Double-click on PFD to run it.
- Enter the IP Address of the printer. Ensure the IP Port is 9100.
- Enter the filename or browse for the flash load file.
- Select OK to begin the upgrade.
Step 3c: To upgrade via TCP/IP from a Macintosh host:
- Download the flash load file.
- Expand the flash file to a folder on the hard drive. The file can be expanded with StuffIt
Expander from Aladdin Systems.
The zip file contains three files- the flash load file (.LOD extension), the PORT utility and the PFD utility.
- Download and install Drop*PS from Bare Bones Software. A Drop*PS desktop printer will be created.
- Open Drop*PS and select File >> Preferences >> Send Files To >> Set. Select
the AppleTalk Zone and the desired printer. Close Drop*PS.
- Drag the flash load file onto the Drop*PS icon to begin the upgrade.
Step 3c: To upgrade via TCP/IP from a UNIX host:
- Download the flash load file.
- Expand the flash file to a folder on the hard drive.
- Use LP to send the flash load file to the printer.
Completing the upgrade:
- During the upgrade, the printer display will show information about each stage of the upgrade.
- When the upgrade is complete, the display will show RESETTING, and the printer will reboot.
- If the printer hangs with RESETTING,
turn the printer power off and on.
- Print the summary page and check the printer configuration.
