Intelliprint Series
Flash SIMMs
6 Aug 2001 Ed Palmer

Summary: The original Flash SIMM used in the Intelliprint series has been superseded by an new version. If an optional SIMM is installed in Flash Slot 2, this can cause some operational issues.

Note: If there is no SIMM in Flash SIMM Slot 2, then there are no issues.

Details: Parts for the original P01 Flash SIMM have been discontinued by the vendor. The P01 Flash SIMM is being replaced by the P02 and P03 Flash SIMM's. The P01 used NOR logic, the P02 and P03 use NAND logic. These differences can cause issues for users with optional Flash SIMM's in Slot 2.

SIMM Slots: The Intelliprint controller supports two Flash SIMM's:

Flash SIMM Slot 1 always contains a Code SIMM. The Code SIMM contains the printer boot code and operating system.

In current versions of printers with IPDS code, the Code SIMM in Flash SIMM Slot 1 contains both the IPDS code and the IPDS fonts in one P03 SIMM. Previous IPDS printers used two P01 SIMMs- Flash SIMM Slot 1 contained the IPDS Code and Flash SIMM Slot 2 contained the IPDS Fonts. The current IPDS code supports both configurations.

Flash SIMM Slot 2 can optionally contain either the User Flash or the Barcode SIMM (refer to TechNote IP-16 for more information on barcode options).

SIMM Types:

P01
P01

The part number printed on the 8M SIMM is 6B0494P01- this document references this as the P01 Flash SIMM. This version is being replaced by the P02.

P02 - part number MLXXXF-FL

The part number printed on the 8M SIMM is 6B0494P02- this is referenced this as the P02 Flash SIMM.

P03 - part number MLXXXF-FM

The part number on the 16M SIMM is 6B0494P03- this is referred to as as the P03 Flash SIMM. The P03 Flash SIMM is a 16M version of the P02.

Format: The P02 and P03 SIMM require a different file system format, referred to as Flash Format 3. Format 3 is incorporated into the product versions listed below. If the product version is upgraded, and a User or Barcode SIMM is installed, the user will be prompted to format the User SIMM. Formatting the User SIMM will delete all files.

If the original load files are not available to re-program the User SIMM, contact TallyGenicom Technical Support for help before upgrading.
Printer Flash Code: The printer product version must be at a minimum level to support the P02 and P03 SIMM's as either a Code SIMM or a User SIMM. All printers shipping with a P02 or P03 Code SIMM will be at this level or higher. All printers that shipped with a P01 Code SIMM must be incrementally upgraded- the printer must first be upgraded to the Format 3 version, then upgraded to the latest version.

Determining the SIMM Type:

The SIMM type can be determined by remove the Intelliprint controller (mL320, mL401, LNM40) or removing the side of the printer (mL210, mL280, LN21, LN28) and looking at the SIMM(s). Refer to the photos above.

The Flash SIMM type also be determined by printing the Flash Summary page

MENU >> FLASH MENU >> PRINT SUMMARY

Note: The Flash Menu only appears when a User Flash SIMM is installed and recognized.

Under the headings SIMM 0 (Code Flash) and SIMM 1 (User Flash), note the entry for Socket 0 information:

P01 - 2 MB (AMD 016) this is repeated four times for a total of 8MB

P02 - 8 MB (TOSHIBA V64A)

P03 - 16MB (Toshiba 58128)

SIMM to SIMM Copy: The SIMM to SIMM copy method described in TechNote IP-01 will only work between SIMM's of the same type.

Memory: If the Code SIMM is a P02 or P03, the memory installed in the DRAM SIMM Slots must be installed in a certain order. Slot 3 must be filled first, then Slot 2, then Slot 1.
