Resolving SERVICE ERROR 02 and SERVICE ERROR 03
8 Mar 2004 Ed Palmer
Summary: SERVICE ERROR 02 and
SERVICE ERROR 03 indicate that the printer software encountered a situation
it could not handle or that the processor received an invalid instruction.
Resolution:
These items are in no particular order. Read the entire
list before proceeding.
Power:
Ensure the printer power is directly plugged into a power
outlet that is not overloaded. Do not use long extension cords. Surge supressors
and UPS's are not recommended.
Models such as the mL450 are rated at 900W and require
an 8 Amp circuit.
If the error occurs while printing:
- Turn the printer power off and on.
- If the error persists, reset the NVRAM.
This need be done only once.
- If the error still occurs, ensure the printer has the
latest Product Version. Refer to TechNote IP-UPG-01.
- If the error persists, perform the Service
Error Analysis.
- If the error still occurs, remove or disconnect all
printer options: Extra RAM memory, Flash memory, Network Interface Card, Hard
Drive, Feeders, Output Bins, Duplexer, etc. Power up the printer. If the error
goes away, install the options one at a time until the failed option is found.
- Reseat the memory- move it to a different slot.
- Ensure the memory is qualified. Refer to TechNotes IP-MEM-01
and IP-MEM-05 for photos of the correct memory.
- If another like printer is available, swap the controller
and memory. If the problem follows the controller, swap the memory between
printers.
- Replace the controller.
- Replace the memory
- Replace the MCU
If the error occurs on power-up:
- Turn the printer power off and on.
- If the error still occurs, reset the OID.
This needs to be done only once.
- If the error persists, reset the NVRAM.
This needs to be done only once. This need be done only

- Replace the controller.
- Replace the memory.
- Replace the MCU.
- When the error occurs, press the NEXT key and
note the codes:
- mL320, mL401, LNM40: SERVICE ERROR 02, ID=00000000
A tray has an unsupported media size:
- Check the media size inTray 2 and 3. Ensure the
paper stops are not set to A5 or half letter.
- Turn the printer power off, set the paper stops
in Tray 2 and Tray 3 to the maximum, turn the power on.
Note: Removing the paper tray will not reset the media size for the tray-
the size is stored in memory and changes only when the tray is installed.
- Remove the trays and look for paper stuck behind
the trays.
- Examine the white plastic actuator on the back of
trays 2 and 3. The actuator should move only when the paper stops are
moved. If the wire cable is broken, the actuator will move freely.
- This issue has been resolved with Product Version
3.54.
- mL320, mL401, LNM40: SERVICE ERROR 02, ID=F005001
Bad fuser, bad MCU board or bad Intelliprint controller.
- All models: SERVICE ERROR 02, ID=F0000002
Bad MCU board, bad DRAM or bad Intelliprint controller.
- SERVICE ERROR 03, TOA: PCxxxxxxxx: C00800008
(where x is any character)
The printer has run out of operating memory, or the
memory is bad.
If, on boot, the printer display shows READY, waits a bit, then flashes PROCESSING
- POWER ON FILES, then there are Power-on
files stored in User Flash or Disk. Power-on files are loaded from Flash
or Disk into RAM. Power-on files use memory- remove the User Flash SIMM
and test. Add DRAM as needed.

Service
Error Analysis
- With the Service Error message displayed, press
NEXT and record the error codes. Press NEXT again
and record any additional codes.
If the NEXT codes are differ for each error, there
may be a controller or memory issue.
- If possible, print the summary page (MENU
>> FUNCTIONS > PRINT SUMMARY). Under the
Information section, record the Product Version, the Engine Version,
and the Network Version.
- Attempt to reproduce the problem. Record all conditions
that cause the error.
- If a particular file or job causes the error,
provide TallyGenicom with a copy of the job. This can be the original
file, a spooled job, or a job captured to the printer with a User Flash
SIMM.
This procedure will not immediately resolve the issue,
but will provide TallyGenicom support the needed information.
