Summary: Under Word, a dot matrix printer is selected. A printer resident font is selected. The following problems may be seen:

• The print head makes a lot of back and forth movement, causing slow printing.
• The character spacing is incorrect. Columns of text do not line up with forms.
• The fonts displayed on the screen appear wide and coarse.
• Printer resident barcodes appear compressed.
• Printer resident barcodes print wider than desired.
• Printer reisdent barcodes will not scan.

Cause: Word uses a printer-independent layout scheme and does not rely on printer information (metrics) to lay out the document. As a result, when printer fonts are selected, Word sends spacing commands between each character that are calculated incorrectly.

Solutions:

Set Word to use printer metrics:

• From Word, Select Tools >> Options >> Compatibility.
• Under Recommended Options For, select Microsoft Word 97.
• Under Options, check Use Printer Metrics to Layout Document.
• Select OK.

This must be selected for each document, but is saved with the document.

or

Change the printer graphics resolution:

• From Word, select File >> Print >> Properties >> Graphics.
• Change the Resolution per the following table:

• The screen fonts will now appear normal, and text should print properly.

This setting will apply to all open documents, but is not saved with the document.
